The Churchill Hotel
1914 Connecticut Avenue NW, Washington DC
Embassy Row
Property Description
The Churchill Hotel near Embassy Row has stood as a historic landmark on Connecticut Avenue for over one hundred years. The property has evolved since its construction in 1906 as a luxury apartment house, when it offered panoramic views of the city, surrounding country and the Potomac River. Over the past century, it has preserved its Old World charm and pre-war ambience to remain one of Washington's most elegant and unique hotels.
Before becoming the Churchill, the property was known as the "Highlands," a luxury apartment house. In 1906, construction for the Highlands began on exclusive Connecticut Avenue. Construction costs totaled over $200,000, an incredible sum for the era. Its proximity to Embassy Row and the Capitol made the Highlands the luxury residence for many diplomats, dignitaries, and politicians. In 1955, the building was sold to a group of investors who remodeled it into a luxury hotel. The inside rooms were gutted, but the outside structure remained. Newly renovated, the Churchill Hotel near Embassy Row now stands as a technologically advanced, modern boutique hotel with its same pre-war elegance.
