The hotel's history actually dates from the 19th century when it was owned by the Rockefellers and known as the Murray Hill Hotel. In 1973, the property was purchased by the Kitano Group and opened as the Hotel Kitano, the first Japanese owned hotel in New York City. A welcome gesture was made by Mayor Lindsay by presenting the “key to the city” to the hotel.

Hakubai Japanese Restaurant
Hakubai serves traditional Japanese favorites at lunch and dinner. The distinctive Kaiseki cuisine is noted for exquisite presentation as well as its delicate taste. Seats include 44 dining seats, 5 counter seats, and 3 private tatami rooms that consist of 16 seats, 6 seats, and 4 seats. Hakubai is open seven days a week for lunch (11:45 am to 2:30 pm) and dinner (6:00 pm to 10:00 pm).
THE GARDEN CAFÉ
The Garden Café accommodates 45 guests for lunch and dinner or 50 guests for cocktail receptions. Light modern setting offering International menu that features contemporary continental cuisine. The café is open seven days a week for breakfast (7:00 am to 11:30 am on Mon-Fri, 7:00 am to 11:00 am on Sat, Sun, Holiday), brunch (11:00 am to 2:30 pm on Sat & Sun), lunch (11:30 am to 2:30 pm), midday menu (2:30 pm to 5:00 pm) and dinner (5:30 pm to 10:00 pm). Available as well for private and semi-private functions. The Garden Café's main entrance is at 40 E. 38th Street.
Bar Lounge
The Bar Lounge, on the mezzanine overlooking the Lobby and Park Avenue, offers New York's most sophisticated cocktail hour. The bar lounge seats 35.
